The aim of this article is to show the differences between Leopardi and Nietzsche around the formal dimension of their philosophical writing. Despite being an aspect on which they have traditionally been juxtaposed, their characteristic «short form» is only apparently similar. It will first be shown how their view of reality, and consequently of philosophy, was different. Then an attempt will be made to understand whether Nietzsche’s aphorisms and fragments can be related to the "Zibaldone" and the "Pensieri". Finally, it will be investigated why their aspiration for a "Hauptwerk" failed, showing how this «failure» is not a bad shipwreck.
