630The minimal and purely academic aim of this text is to challenge the prevailing interpretation of Jean-Luc Nancy as a thinker of an ontology of potentiality, where being is always suspended, perpetually deferring its realization. On the contrary, it will be demonstrated that at the core of his reflection lies an attempt to approach an ontological incontinence, whereby existence cannot not exist. This positions Nancy as a thinker of act rather than potentiality; of the infinite rather than finitude. More broadly, however, the text seeks first to reconstruct the reasons why, in the 20th century, "chance" subsumes the entire ontology, becoming not merely its method but its very mode. Starting from here, Nancy’s thought will be explored to uncover resources for conceiving "chance" not as insignificance or abandonment, but as absolute singularization that disrupts the equivalential mechanisms prevailing in our civilization.
