This essay examines the theatrical costumes designed by Bernardo Buontalenti for the Intermedi of Girolamo Bargagli’s La pellegrina (1589), focusing on the drawings found by Aby Warburg in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence. Though here attributed to collaborators, the designs reflect Buontalenti’s vision of dressing gods in fantastical ancient garments enriched with naturalistic details. The costumes merge myth and nature with contemporary references, creating a dialogue between the ideal and the everyday across the Intermedi and comedy.
