«Il ne convient pas à tout le monde de faire parler le marbre & les couleurs»: with this remark, C.-F. Ménestrier underscores the complexity of giving visual form to mourning in Des décorations funèbres, a treatise that codifies the aesthetics of Baroque funeral pomp – exemplified by the Este funerals in mid-17th-century Modena. Designed by the Jesuit Gamberti, these installations were accompanied by his Idea di un Prencipe, which combines panegyric and programmatic commentary, and includes a substantial set of engravings. This article explores Gamberti’s strategies for making images, quite literally, ‘speak’.
