The coronation of Ferdinand III as Holy Roman Emperor prompted celebrations in Rome by foreign nations in 1637. The festivities and fireworks were described in commemorative volumes, sometimes illustrated, that sought to capture their mechanical and ephemeral effects. Printmakers experimented with serial images, with serpentine lines, and with feverish scratching. This essay focuses on festivities organized by Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy, the fireworks machines he commissioned in the form of mountains, and their reanimation in the Applausi festivi.
