Emanuele Tesauro playfully attributed the ability to stimulate wit and metaphorical thinking to the vapours released in the body by mind-altering substances. This essay considers how two ballets performed at the 17th-century Savoy court, Il Tabacco and I Bacchanali antichi e moderni, centered on tobacco and wine respectively, wove this idea into their narrative and choreography. By examining the gouache drawings commemorating these events, it explores their potential sources, propagandistic aims, and shared themes of human ingenuity and natural resources in transformation.
