This article considers popular displays of automata in 17th-century Amsterdam. Arguing that their purpose was to rouse wonder in order to prompt new ways of thinking, it connects the exhibitions to the emergence of mechanical understandings of the body, specifically the philosophy of René Descartes. The article concludes that a mechanical worldview served Amsterdam’s elite, especially their profiteering from the business of slavery.
