Thanks to recent accessions to the catalog of Luigi Miradori, known as Genovesino, it is possible to face the historical, iconographic and chronologic enigma of the controversial Supplizio di Muzio Scevola, formerly in the Olivetan church of San Lorenzo in Cremona, which had given hard time to local connoisseurs and intellectuals starting from the late eighteenth century. The aim is to elucidate, through a reconstruction of the iconographic and literary fortune of the subject, an adequate comparison with its pendant and a glance to the historical events of Cremona, the correct destination and dating of the painting.
