To understand the current function of criminal law, it is useful to start from its point of arrival: the place where sentences are served. Prisons in our country today appear overcrowded, closed environments, increasingly distant from fulfilling the purpose assigned to punishment by the Constitution and progressively less consistent with the principle of humanity in the execution of sanctions. The examination of its ever-growing numbers reveals its social composition and poses questions to society as a whole.
