In developing a reflection on the relationship between prison and society, this contribution does not intend to consider the two terms as hierarchically situated from a value perspective – society is always better than prison, and one goes from society to prison – but rather seeks to explore the ambivalence of this relationship. On the one hand, it investigates how the prison model, based on punitive logic, has spread beyond the walls of the penitentiary and permeated society; on the other, it examines how innovative experiences arisen in prison – prison libraries, university studies, etc. – are capable of positively influencing a society that is becoming less and less a Open Society and increasingly a Closed Society.
