In this article, the authors discuss the topic of abolitionism in criminal field, starting from its origins and its various declinations and interpretations, and then focusing on the proposal to abolish prison as a further step in the process of civilizing punishment, begun in the modern era thanks to the theoretical contributions of the legal Enlightenment, and Cesare Beccaria in particular.
