The prison system lies at the intersection of criminal law, constitutional culture, social and health issues, architecture and urban planning, pedagogy, general sociology and sociology of law, moral and legal philosophy, as well as history and geopolitics. Prison reform has undergone three major phases throughout the 20th century in Italy. However, the prison system appears unable to absorb the proposed changes over time. The most recent legislative changes pursue the most grim social sentiments of an afflictive nature.
