In Italy, attention to juvenile prisons has been far less than that devoted to adult prisons for many years. The 17 juvenile detention centers (IPM) in our country have had a relatively quiet existence and have “managed” a very limited population of minors and young adults. Today, the situation is undergoing profound change and, as in adult prisons, there are problems of overcrowding, management difficulties, riots, and even a case of suicide. To understand this change, the article refers to the principles of juvenile criminal procedure in our country and describes the period of that great ‘social experiment’ which, for over 35 years, made the use of imprisonment for minors “residual”. A path that maintains references to the principles of juvenile justice attentive to the development and future of offenders is still possible by committing to rethinking methods and tools, in the constant relationship between institutions and the community.
