As an interdiscipline, digital literary stylistics contributes to and benefits from the broader field of Digital Humanities. Both domains recognise the value of corpus and other digitally-enhanced tools for identifying linguistic patterns in large textual datasets, where distant reading and big data approaches are common. This essay establishes a dialogue between the close reading of stylistics and the distant reading of Digital Humanities, integrating corpus-assisted translational stylistics to analyse – both quantitatively and qualitatively – recurring patterns associated with specific meanings in original and translated texts. Focusing on Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway and its latest Italian translation, the study adopts an interlingual parallel model to examine how key stylistic features are conveyed or modified in the target text. The two versions of the novel are analysed in Sketch Engine as aligned parallel corpora, with a focus on linguistic markers of point of view, including deictic adverbs, demonstratives, verba sentiendi, reporting verbs, and the connectives but and for. Sketch Engine’s Word Sketch tool visualises lexico-grammatical behaviour in context, while parallel concordances identify shifts between source and target texts. After evaluating the impact of the translator’s lexical choices on point of view, the study compares Sketch Engine outputs with those from Voyant Tools. By employing corpus methods to investigate style in translation, this work shows how digital literary stylistics and Digital Humanities offer complementary perspectives for analysing texts both closely and from a distance.
