Empathy in human communication is a complex phenomenon that involves both cognitive and emotional processes. With the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs), there has been increasing interest in how AI-powered systems convey (or mimic) empathy through language, influencing user trust and interaction experiences. However, there is no clear definition of the specific communicative strategies that characterize empathy in either human or AI interactions. Drawing from interactional linguistics, discourse-pragmatic analysis and empathic AI research, this study examines how empathy is linguistically constructed in human-human online peer support interaction and human-AI communication.
