This paper aims to trace the history of the technical term “linguistic simplification”. Originating in the field of general linguistics, the expression has gradually became more and more widespread in the field of the specialized language of institutional communication. In this context, starting in the 1990s and through intense scientific and even normative activity, it has become a central term in the metalanguage of institutional Italian, a complex variety rooted in stereotyped usages that in recent years has not only failed to progress but has suffered a marked decline. From this perspective, the process of simplification thus maintains a pivotal role in a fundamental process for improving the quality of the language of institutions and laws.
