93This study engages to examine the evolution of perception verb imperatives into discourse markers in French and Spanish. The transformed function of these verb forms exemplifies creative linguistic actualization in discourse traditions, reflecting pragmatic shifts by speakers in reconceptualizing lexical items. Corpus-based analysis using Sketch Engine, alongside French Web 2023 and Spanish Web 2023 corpora, investigates the imperatives écoute, escucha, regarde, and mira. These forms originally denoted active sensory perception but have evolved into discourse elements, marking tradition adherence. A comparison reveals differences like regarde being limited to Canadian French. The analysis demonstrates how agentive verb features impact discourse marker development, with Spanish imperatives oye and oiga defying passive perception origins to perform discourse functions. Through historical, semantic, and functional scrutiny, verbs of perception were shown to convey a range of pragmatic roles, including changing viewpoints and managing conversational dynamics. This understanding expands frameworks on linguistic competence and idiomaticity, showing how discourse markers integrate into communication, bearing cultural and intersubjective meanings.
