138In the history of philosophy, Wittgenstein is, by far, one of the most sophisticated and complex voices. The way he conceives philosophy has aroused considerable appreciation (Russel, Moore, von Wright) but also perplexity, if not indifference and even disdain (Popper, Chomsky, and Coseriu). Although so much has been written about his work, some aspects have not yet been systematically treated, among them the question regarding the task of philosophy. This article re-thematizes this key issue, with a focus on two preliminary steps. It, therefore, sheds light on Wittgenstein’s attempt to delimit the task of philosophy both from without, distinguishing philosophical from non-philosophical problems (of a different nature), and from within, differentiating philosophical problems from pseudo-problems (knots or entanglements). By documenting the evolution of these ideas over time, from his 1914-1916 Notebooks and Private Notebooks to the Tractatus [1921/1913-1918], and from works such as Culture and Value [1914-1951], Philosophical Remarks [1929-1930], and Philosophical Grammar [1931-1934] up to the Blue Book [1933-1934] and the Philosophical Investigations [I: 1936-1945, II: 1947-1949; pref.: 1945], this research also invites to an integral reading of Wittgenstein’s work. To avoid any ‘prejudices’, positive or negative, the analysis is in great part based on a direct reading of Wittgenstein’s texts.
