The present study aims to deal with several questions related to the frame of metalanguage, a construct that plays a crucial role in contemporary linguistic research. Formal logic introduced the distinction between two levels of language: the “language-object” and, with a technicality proposed by Alfred Tarski in 1931, the metalanguage (translation of the original Polish term metajęzyk). Through progressive expansion of its meaning, the term “metalanguage” has come to refer to any language that reflects on and makes assertions about language itself, at both conscious and spontaneous levels. A metalinguistic utterance occurs whenever speech is oriented toward the code, making the code itself the object of communication.
