The article explores the concept of multimodality both in theory and in empirical research within the field of foreign languages, in schools and universities, with a particular focus on German as a foreign language. To this end, it first presents the three predominant forms of analysis of multimodal interaction: 1. the multimodal perspective in cognitivist-sociocultural approaches, 2. multimodality conceptualized and applied in research within the socio-semiotic analysis of discourse, and 3. its integration into conversation analysis. In addition to explaining the specific terminology of each discipline, along with its distinctive characteristics, examples from empirical research will illustrate the different theoretical and methodological objectives.
