The Justice System refers to the restorative paradigm as the possibility for the victim of a crime, for the person indicated as the offender and for other members of the community to participate freely, consensually, actively and voluntarily, in the resolution of the issues arising from the crime itself, with the help of a mediator. As this certainly represents an opportunity for conflict pacification, we wonder whether limiting the restorative approach to such boundaries of Justice System does not risk compressing its (re)generative potential. How can restorative practices, in their intrinsic dimension of promoting social bonds and relationships, contribute to social cohesion and have a concrete impact on communities? The key may perhaps be found in the diffusion of values such as the recognition of the other self, co-responsibility, proactivity and prosociality, on which to base a common language for different institutional and territorial realities, promoting an approach of restorative culture rather than restorative justice.
