Restorative justice in Northern Ireland originated where there were high levels of economic deprivation, civil disorder and political violence. In 2002 a law was passed which established restorative justice in the youth justice system accommodating the participation of victims, perpetrators and communities. Based upon the author’s research and practice, the article argues that restorative justice can address the challenges facing modern European societies through the activation of community.
