The article proposes a brief and schematic reinterpretation of the relationship between Ernesto Buonaiuti and modernism according to the criteria of historical research. Faced with the complexity of the figure and the work of the main exponent of Catholic modernism in Italy, some questions arise on which research will have to go deeper than what is already known: the overall reconstruction of Buonaiuti’s biography, some questions of chronology regarding the modernist crisis, the criteria of Buonaiuti’s religious reformism, the history of the Roman modernist group, Buonaiuti’s attitude towards ecumenism and his relations with other Christian churches, and Buonaiuti’s self-understanding of modernism.
