This essay analyses the evolution of the cultural, spiritual, and pastoral formation of the clergy in Italy from the beginning of the 20th century to Vatican II. It highlights the problems faced and the attempts made by ecclesiastical authorities to reform the curricula and disciplinary norms regulating clerical training – from Pius X’s 1907 reform and its troubled implementation, marked by the establishment of regional seminaries, to the interventions of Pius XI and Pius XII in a rapidly changing society – culminating in the moderate openings of Vatican II.
