Karl Rahner played a significant role in Vatican II through the influence of his earlier theological work, his participation as a "peritus" during the Council itself, his collaborative work with other theologians and bishops, and his efforts to disseminate and interpret the conciliar event for a wider public. While his work during the council has been explored through various sources, his nearly 800 letters to Luise Rinser during those years have not been included. This article collects the comments on Vatican II found in that collection of letters. The letters show Rahner’s daily work for the Council, especially in the intersessions, his relationship with other theologians and bishops, and some informal comments on conciliar documents.
