This contribution explores some research directions concerning the relationship between physical activity, sport, and educational processes from a sociological perspective. Starting from the acknowledgement that this topic has received limited attention within the Italian sociology of education compared to the international debate, the authors concentrate on three thematic axes: the social construction and regulation of bodies through physical education; the influence of market logics and neoliberal governance on educational and sport programmes; and the role of public policies in promoting sport as a tool for inclusion, citizenship, and well-being. The paper introduces and frames a Special issue devoted to these topics, offering a synthetic reflection on the current state of the debate and open research perspectives, while bringing together contributions and case studies from diverse international contexts.
