At the end of the Sixties, the former president of Italian Olympic Committee, Giulio Onesti, set up a new festival of youth sports, by which he launched a real provocation to the whole school community, that had always considered physical education as a subordinate subject. The establishment of Giochi della Gioventù, officially started in 1969, paved the way to a new chapter in the relationships between school and sport, if only because Ministry of Education did not take direct part in this event until 1975. The following partnership between CONI and the highest authorities of Italian school should have strengthen the social value of sport, but the impressive growth of Youth Games – that involved up to a maximum of 4 million students in the late Eighties – did not match with a homogeneous evolution of physical education curricula at every level. This paper aims to analyse the main stages of Giochi della Gioventù in relation to the Italian social and cultural history.
