210The survey analyses the impact of the Chilean coup of September 11, 1973, on
the Italian political and cultural world, with particular attention to the responses of
the major mass parties and the ways in which they interpreted the event within the
framework of the Cold War. The experience of the Unidad Popular government was
viewed in Italy not merely as a Latin American event, but as a potential mirror of
domestic political dynamics, contributing to a redefinition of strategies and alliances.
The article also traces the evolution of historiography on the topic, highlighting
both the initial delays and gaps, and the more recent lines of research that emerged
around the fiftieth anniversary of the coup – characterized by a growing transna-
tional perspective, increased attention to social history, and a renewed interest in the
political cultures of the right
