This paper seeks to examine the specific sector of the Italian production system represented by Italian agro-industrial companies, in light of the findings of the 7th ISTAT Agricultural Census. In reality, the specific focus of the study is the related deepening activities of agricultural companies, as a proxy for the diverse set of agro-industrial businesses. The investigation is conducted along two complementary lines: the first aims to verify the prevailing territorial localization among Italian regions, while the second aims to identify the main characteristics, not all of which are positive, exhibited by agro-industrial companies. Contrary to what is most frequently argued, it emerges first of all that related deepening activities appear to be more prevalent in all southern regions, as well as in Lazio, compared to the remaining central and northern regions. Secondly, it appears that these activities are predominantly carried out by young farmers, who – although they do not show significant innovation – could represent a diversification of the most widespread production processes adopted in the agricultural sector, a process that is likely to continue over time. Finally, interesting prospects for further study are identified, starting with a review of the current reclassification.
