The paper examines the role of community cooperatives within the ongoing transformations of the contemporary social economy, framing them as one of the most advanced expressions of neo-mutualism. From a place-based perspective, the article shows how these cooperatives operate as institutional mechanisms capable of producing economic, social, and cultural value, while mediating relationships between citizens, public authorities, and economic stakeholders. The analysis focuses in particular on their transformative potential in local development processes, with attention to territories affected by socio-demographic vulnerability, in both urban and rural settings. The paper concludes by addressing the role of culture as a form of territorial infrastructure and as a key domain of action for community cooperatives.
