The article analyzes the only advisory opinion expressed so far by the European Court of Human Rights about freedom of thought, conscience and religion under Protocol No. 16. The opinion, requested by the Belgian Council of State on issues related to the relationship between religious freedom and security, involved a Belgian citizen, S.B., accused of supporting Salafism. The procedural and substantive implications of the decision are explored, highlighting how religious freedom can nowadays act as a driving force to restrict other fundamental rights, such as the right to work.
