This essay analyses the strikes of March 1943 in Northern Italy as a transition from a twenty-year struggle conducted by small, illegal groups to mass resistance against the fascist regime. They marked the working class’s first reappropriation of its own identity and collective subjectivity. At the same time, they anticipated a central aspect of the Resistance: namely the successful encounter between the generation of prison and exile and the new anti-fascist generation that came of age in Italy between the 1930s and the World War II. The essay concludes by addressing two issues of great historiographical importance: the relationship between the movement and the clandestine communist groups, and the movement’s political character, which precipitated the conservative manoeuvre that would lead, on 25 July, to the fall of Fascism.
