In reaction to the ‘socialist hypothesis' of Emilio Gabaglio's presidency, in the early 1970s some of the members of the ACLI left a movement, whose ‘consensus' had been revoked by the CEI and for which Paul VI expressed his regret. In 1972, the Movimento Cristiano Lavoratori was born from the splinter groups, faithful to the social doctrine of the Church, with an effort to outline a cultural perspective opposed to revolutionary Marxism, as well as the ‘technocracy' induced by the evolution of modern capitalism.
