The article deals with the history of the Nyolcak (the Eights), a painters’ group unanimously recognized as the First Avant-garde in 20. century Hungary. On the background of the specific conditions of their country, which the article briefly sketches, the Eights succeeded in catching the spirit of the epoch and contributed to its shaping. They broke with inherited aesthetical precepts, found new ways to address the art market as well as the public at large and developed a program aimed at revitalizing, not disrupting, Hungarian culture and society. This program they shared with outstanding Hungarian musicians and writers of the time. The outbreak of the World War, in which some of the Eights enrolled voluntarily serving in the Kriegsmaler corps, and the post-war disorders in Hungary put an end to the existence of the group as such, leaving open the question about the direction it would have taken had more time be given to it.
