The essay deals with the issue of work in inner areas, i.e. those territories characterized by a significant distance from certain essential services (such as health, schooling, mobility) that makes daily life difficult. After an initial part aimed at framing the terms of the abandonment of inner areas and the relationship between these and urban ones, the essay highlights the importance of business networks for the enhancement of territories, also and above all from an employment point of view, as well as the opportunities offered today by the possibility of working remotely for the regeneration of inner areas. In conclusion, the author emphasizes the need to concentrate on a place-based approach to try to imagine a different demographic future for those places that in recent decades have witnessed processes of progressive depopulation and the abandonment of traditional small businesses.
