In this text I clarify the relationship between imprisonment and its extended effects on prisoners’ families. Firstly, I examine the theoretical positions that limit the assemblage between imprisonment and family members, depoliticizing the problem. I then proceed to systematize the assemblages between imprisonment and its extended effects on families through different interpretative levels, defining the position of family members in the correctional system: the degradation in visits; the control of relationships; the shaping of gender relations; the extension of correctional motives on families; the imposition on families of the costs of imprisonment; the consequences of the socio-spatial concentration of imprisonment; the family reaction to the labelling of the penal system; and the effects on families of the extra-penal functions of imprisonment. The critical analysis and classification of the existing literature leads to the development of a synthetic and comparative analysis tool.
