Taking its cue from Silvana Castignone’s solicitation to valorize, in relation to bioethical issues, the principle of equality, the essay proposes an analysis of the path that, on the theoretical level no less than on the practical-political one, has supported, and is still supporting, the implementation of end-of-life interventions, functional to the dignified death of each individual, assuming (precisely) the principle of equality as the key to interpreting the stages already achieved and those that remain to be achieved. The analysis shows that the equal right of all individuals to receive care solutions aimed at relieving them of suffering and respecting them in their wishes has obtained, on the ethical, deontological and legal levels, a very significant recognition, but not yet fully corroborated by practices. And it emerges, on the other hand, that there are other steps to be taken to overcome inequalities in dying with dignity.
