In general, the term colonial literature has been understood to refer mainly to anything published in Italy on a colonial theme. This article proposes that what was printed in the colonies should also be included in the category of colonial literature. The article deals with the first three Italian weeklies in Eritrea (1891-1897) and the first two Tigrinya-language periodicals in Eritrea (1909-1919). In both cases, these sources are used to highlight important changes in the social and cultural composition of Eritrea, demonstrating how printed sources in Africa can be instrumental in revealing important changes in the societies of many African countries. For these reasons, it is important to pay more attention to these sources, to recover them and make them accessible.
