127The struggle for the liberation of Mozambique and the other Portuguese colonies in Africa developed during the years of the rise of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Anti-colonialism was one of the main claims of NAM, and thus the first wave of independence in sub-Saharan Africa during the 1960s was one of the main tests of non-alignment in general. Analysing the relationship between NAM and one of the nationalist movements that fought for independence in Southern Africa in the 1960s-1970s, the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO) in Mozambique, allows us to explore two important dimensions. First, Mozambican nationalism as a mirror of the international disputes that marked the transition from the 1955 Bandung Conference to the birth and development of NAM after the 1961 Summit in Belgrade. Second, NAM as an international arena for the political legitimisation of FRELIMO and other nationalist movements in the Portuguese colonies.
