As the place of religion in Irish society has evolved – with both increased multiculturalism and increased secularism evident in recent years – pressure to remove or modernise many (often Roman Catholic-inspired) aspects of the Constitution of Ireland has grown. In this context, this article provides a nuanced insight into the complex relationship between religion, society and the Constitution in the jurisdiction. The article first explores the latest available statistical data to paint a picture of the religious makeup of contemporary Ireland. It then discusses the recent referenda attempting major constitutional reform in relation to both the definition of the 'Family' and the so-called 'woman’s place in the home' provisions, before analysing the results of the aforesaid referenda and looking to the future.
