In Sub-Saharan states, the landscape of LGBTQ+ rights is markedly heterogeneous. This contribution highlights the different approaches to sexual minority rights policies within the African region: in some countries, cultural and legislative openings have emerged in response to the persistent narrative portraying Africa as a deeply repressive environment for sexual minorities; in others, there has been a tightening of conservative and homophobic legislative policies, partly due to the influence of Trumpism. The article examines the role of religion and the impact of Trumpism in shaping anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, particularly how such rhetoric frames homosexuality as an external threat and a form of Western neocolonialism. Furthermore, the political use of anti-LGBTQ+ discourse in electoral contexts serves to divert public attention from internal issues such as governmental inefficiency and corruption, while also reflecting growing geopolitical tensions between Western values and an alternative model more attuned to local cultural specificities.
