In the face of radical changes to the religious and cultural landscape of Italian society, the issue of religious education in state schools has once again become highly topical. The practical implementation of the principles developed by the Council of Europe is still being neglected, which makes it difficult to reconcile the Italian model with an intercultural and inclusive vision of education, including religious education. Various proposals for change have been put forward over time, with the aim of enhancing the existing legislative model or introducing structural changes. Recently, the majority religious community has proposed a radical rethink of religious education in public schools. This proposal aims to involve religious and non-religious actors according to an inclusive secular vision.This opens a new debate on an issue that is as historical as it is central to today’s world.
