This essay explores the Carnival of Viareggio as a media event and sociopolitical mirror of modern Italy. Emerging in 1873, the Viareggio Carnival evolved from a bourgeois festivity into a popular spectacle, embodying national transitions and crises. From the fall of Fascism to the collapse of the First Republic, its allegorical floats have narrated Italy’s political and cultural metamorphoses. The Carnival’s satirical dimension enables it to communicate complex messages, challenge power, and reflect societal discontent. Positioned at the crossroads of folklore, mass communication, and civic ritual, it operates as both a festive event and a symbolic tool of collective memory and critique. Especially during the crisis of the early 1990s, it became a stage for the moral degradation of political elites, echoing the media’s and civil society’s call for renewal. Thus, the Carnival is not merely entertainment—it is a civic language through which the nation sees and narrates itself.
