This contribution explores the potential impact of the proposed Regulation, which aims to harmonise EU rules on private international law concerning parenthood, on the free movement of persons within the European Union. To this end, the existing legal framework and the obstacles to recognising parenthood between Member States will first be recalled. Afterwards, the proposed Regulation's envisaged steps forward will be evaluated against the recent developments in the Court of Justice case law. Moreover, the proposal's real prospects of approval will also have to be assessed, since it will likely face resistance as it touches a sensitive area such as filiation, in which at least some Member States are reluctant to cede portions of their sovereignty.
