11Drawing on themes specific to cultural studies, this monograph focuses on the exploration of both national and transnational identities (Italian-American, Hispanic, Latino) through the figure of Christopher Columbus, in his trajectory from universal icon of modernization to denationalized symbol of European colonialism in postcolonial and anti-racist memories. This exploration highlights the diverse languages that convey his identity representations (celebratory rituals, exhibitions, museums, monuments, street names, and material objects). The dossier includes case studies that span the Euro-American horizon, with a historiographical and methodological status quaestionis at the beginning and then the sequence of related case studies: the inauguration and history of the monument in honor of Columbus erected in 1892 in the central Columbus Circle in New York, followed by the similar events of the monuments located in both Buenos Aires and Barcelona, to which is added the story of how Portuguese Estado Novo of Salazar also looked with interest at the figure and myth of Columbus.
