62This article reconstructs the timing and modalities of Giacomo Matteotti’s reception in Vienna in the decade following his assassination, analysing the events that led to important public spaces being named after him. In the Austrian capital, the Italian socialist leader immediately became a symbol of opposition to fascism, but also a warning in the face of the growing fascist threat in Austria itself. The dedications to Matteotti, the consequent Italian irritation and their removal following the authoritarian turn in Austria allow us to reconstruct the evolution of bilateral relations between Italy and Austria, as well as the tensions between the Austrian conservative government and the socialist government of the municipality of Vienna. The appearance and disappearance of references to Matteotti represent a sort of litmus test of Italian-Austrian relations and the replacement of Matteotti’s name with that of a «martyr» of Italian fascism in 1934 appears as a very clear sign of the advance of fascism in Europe and an example of competition for control of the public space.
