Located in a folder found in the series of the Gabinetto della Presidenza del Consiglio dei ministri at the Central State Archive in Rome, the three documents presented in this article allow for the reconstruction of the history of the Schedario critico consultivo della letteratura infantile (Italian Critical-Consultive Index of Children’s Literature, Siccli), an organisation dedicated to promoting the use of recreational reading as a means to facilitate the Fascistisation of young Italians. The Siccli presented itself as a potentially revolutionary tool, linking the Pnf, the Ministry of National Education and the publishers to pursue a revision of the children’s and youth literary production in Italy in order to encourage the distribution of politically suitable books. The organisation enacted its policies primarily through the creation of children’s libraries, whose content was carefully curated to aid the self-representation of the Fascist government. The initiative received the support of a number of Fascist gerarchi and ministries, including Mussolini himself. The documents trace the development of the Siccli from the opening of the first Libreria del Balilla in Florence (1932), to the creation of a second Fascist youth library in Milan, up until its final clash with the Italian publishing enterprise (1933), eventually leading to its apparent dissolution.
