The article explores how historians can critically and effectively use generative artificial intelligence in historical research. After outlining the technology’s development, from early Ai concepts to tools like ChatGpt, the author identifies four general «rules of the game» for interacting with Llms. The author then tests the use of Rag enhanced chatbots (Retrieval Augmented Generation) such as PersonalAi, Google NotebookLm, and Coral Ai, on a corpus of Italian computer magazines (1978 1985), assessing their strengths-semantic search, contextual definitions, thematic mapping-and limitations, including inability to contextualize chronologically, distinguish voices within sources, or reliably avoid distortions. He concludes that historians must remain central to interpretation, know both their sources and the tools intimately, and demand features like large scale Rag, verifiable citations, and metadata attribution.
