This research analyzes the health protection of women prisoners within the Italian prison system. Using a microsociological perspective, it examines the conditions and interactions shaping practices of care and custody in a women’s section of a men’s penal institution in Central-Northern Italy. The relationship between care and control in prisons is complex, and the inclusion of a gender perspective adds further complexity. On the one hand, it requires attention to the specificities of female detention, which, although assimilated to the male condition, presents distinct needs. On the other hand, it raises broader questions about health protection from a gender-specific and intersectional perspective. Research on women’s health in prison in Italy remains limited. To address this gap, this study adopts qualitative methodologies and focuses on women prisoners’ perspectives to better understand health protection in the prison context.
