This article examines the strategies of order construction within a university wing of a northern Italian prison. Drawing on both classical contributions from the sociology of imprisonment and contemporary approaches, the paper explores how current prison management models (primarily dynamic security and open cell regimes) negatively affect the activation of solidarity among inmates and the construction of community. Adopting a qualitative research approach, this study aims to recover inmates’ voices through in-depth interviews and participant observation within the university space. The research identifies several dimensions in the organizational dynamics that undermine prisoners’ solidarity, including: the rapid handling of individual or collective issues, the mitigation of prison deprivations, the demographic composition of the cell block, educational subjectivity, and the logic of rewards. The paper also considers the various ways in which inmates respond to this kind of prison’s regime.
